#EngClass: Because, for, since, as, because of, due to

Pada dasarnya, “because”, “because of”,due to“, “since”, dan “as” adalah kata penghubung (conjunction) yang digunakan pada kalimat sebab-akibat. Kesemuanya punya arti serupa, yaitu “karena”.

Because

“Because” digunakan untuk menghubungkan induk kalimat dan anak kalimat, sehingga biasanya setelah penggunaan ‘because’ diikuti oleh klausa (terdiri dari S + V). “Because” juga digunakan ketika ingin menekankan pada sebab sesuatu terjadi, biasanya penyebab tersebut merupakan informasi baru, belum diketahui banyak orang.

Contoh:

  • He blushed because he knew he had been caught out. (Klausa: he knew …)

For

Kata “because” dan “for” memiliki maksud yang sama. Akan tetapi “because” bersifat lebih formal daripada “for”. “For” tidak pernah digunakan di awal kalimat.

Since, as

Sementara itu, “since” dan “as” digunakan jika penyebab sesuatu terjadi tersebut tidak begitu penting atau sudah diketahui banyak orang.

Contoh:

  • As it is raining again, we have to stay at home for a while.
  • Since it is raining again, we have to stay at home for a while.

Because of, due to

Because of dan due to biasanya diikuti oleh kata benda, berbeda dengan “because” yang harus diikuti klausa yang terdiri dari S + V.  “Because of” menerangkan kata kerja, sedangkan “due to” menerangkan kata benda dan biasanya diikuti oleh verb to be (is, am, are, was, were).

Contoh:

  • I lost my appetite because of a stomachache.
  • My loss of appetite was due to a stomachache.
