#EngTrivia: Commonly confused words

Hey fellas! I will share some words that can sometimes be confusing, even for myself. You see, fellas, some of these words only differ by 1 or 2 letters; some even sound the same.

So how do we differentiate them? For homophonic words, keep you ears alert. We can always differentiate by understanding the context of the sentence. Check out the list below:


  • Desert (n) Arti: gurun pasir.
    • Contoh:
      • The airplane blew up in the sky and the remains scattered in the desert.
  • Desert (v) Arti: meninggalkan, mengabaikan, mencampakkan.
    • Contoh:
      • You wouldn’t desert your kids for all the money in the world.
  • Dessert (n) Arti: hidangan penutup yang manis.
    • Contoh:
      • What would you like for dessert? Strawberry soufflé with ice cream, please.


  • Currant (n) Arti: anggur yang dikeringkan, semacam kismis.
    • Contoh:
      • Of all bread varieties available in the market, she likes currant bread the best.
  • Current (n) Arti: aliran air atau udara.
    • Contoh:
      • I lost my diamond in the river. It was swept away by the strong current.
  • Current (adj) Arti: sekarang, terkini.
    • Contoh:
      • Mr. Yudhoyono is the current president of Indonesia.


  • Censer (n) Arti: tempat pembakaran dupa.
    • Contoh:
      • The priest swung the censer.
  • Censor (v) Arti: menghilangkan bagian yang tidak diinginkan.
    • Contoh:
      • The Board of Film censors profanity and violence from films.
  • Censure (v) Arti: menyalahkan.
    • Contoh:
      • She was censured (disalahkan) for neglecting her work.


  • Metre. Arti: satuan panjang.
    • Contoh:
      • How much does a 5 metres long of ribbon cost?
  • Meter. Arti: alat yang digunakan untuk mengukur sesuatu.
    • Contoh:
      • In San Francisco, parking meters are installed on road sides.


  • Prey (v) Arti: menggeretak,menakuti.
    • Contoh:
      • He preyed on young girls.
  • Prey (n) Arti: mangsa.
    • Contoh:
      • Girls are often the prey of perverts.
  • Pray (v) Arti: berdoa, membuat permohonan dengan sungguh-sungguh (kepada Tuhan).
    • Contoh:
      • Let’s pray for peace on earth.
