#Engtrivia: suppose, supposed to, supposed to be

SUPPOSE

Suppose berarti mengira/mempercayai/membayangkan. Suppose biasa digunakan dalam sebuah permintaan dengan struktur negatif ketika kita berharap mendapatkan jawaban yang positif.

  • Contoh (1): I don’t suppose you could lend me your dress, could you? | Sure! When do you want to use it?
  • Arti (1): Kamu tidak bisa meminjamkan gaunmu ya? | Tentu bisa! Kapan kamu mau pakai?
  • Contoh (2): I suppose it’s too late to see the doctor now, isn’t it? | Hold on. Let me see if I can fit you in.
  • Arti (2): Rasanya sekarang sudah terlambat untuk menemui dokter, ya? | Tunggu sebentar. Mungkin saya bisa menyelipkan jadwal Anda.

Suppose juga digunakan dalam sebuah jawaban singkat yang mempunyai makna mengira/mempercayai/membayangkan.

  • Contoh (1): Will Cynthia be at your house this evening? | I don’t suppose so atau I suppose not.
  • Arti (1): Apakah Cynthia akan ada di rumahmu sore ini? | Saya rasa tidak.
  • Contoh (2): Can you come tomorrow? | I suppose so.
  • Arti (2): Kamu besok bisa datang? | Kurasa bisa.

Suppose/supposing juga dapat digunakan untuk mengawali sebuah saran atau mengungkapkan rasa takut.

  • Contoh (1): I’m not going to take my umbrella. | Suppose/Supposing it rains?
  • Arti (1): Aku ngga mau membawa payung. | Bagaimana kalau hujan?
  • Contoh (2): We haven’t got any cream for the sauce. Suppose/Supposing we use milk instead?
  • Arti (2): Kita ngga punya krim untuk sausnya. Bagamana kalau kita gunakan susu saja?

SUPPOSED TO

Supposed to berarti sesuatu yang seharusnya dikerjakan.

  • Contoh (1): I’m supposed to clean up my room before I go to bed at night, but I’m always lazy.
  • Arti (1): Seharusnya aku membersihkan kamar sebelum tidur, tapi aku selalu malas.
  • Contoh (2): I’m supposed to return these books by Friday, but I don’t think I can go to the library that day.
  • Arti (2): Buku ini seharusnya kukembalikan hari jumat, tapi sepertinya aku nggak bisa pergi ke perpustakaan hari itu.

Dalam past tense, supposed to mempunyai arti sesuatu yang direncanakan namun tidak terjadi.

  • Contoh (1): I was supposed to go to Bali last year but then I got ill and couldn’t go.
  • Arti (1): Seharusnya aku pergi ke Bali tahun lalu tapi aku sakit dan nggak bisa pergi.

SUPPOSED TO BE

Bagaimana dengan supposed to be? Supposed to be berarti seharusnya.

  • Contoh (1): This cake is supposed to be delicious because the chef is very famous. Why don’t you try it?
  • Arti (1): Kue ini seharusnya lezat karena kokinya sangat terkenal. Ayo dicoba.

Perlu diingat bahwa dalam percakapan huruf “d” di “supposed to” tidak dibunyikan. Jadi kita menyebutnya seperti “suppose to”, namun dalam penulisan tetap “supposed to”.

  1. Good post. I be taught something tougher on totally different blogs everyday. It should always be stimulating to learn content from different writers and follow a bit of something from their store.
