#EngTips: useful English conversation phrases (3)

1) “Nerve racking

Kita mengatakan sesuatu itu “nerve racking” jika seseorang/sesuatu mengganggu, menjengkelkan, sulit dikerjakan, atau bikin deg-degan.

Contoh:

  • Saying vows at my wedding has been the most nerve-racking moment in my entire life.

2) “Could use

Frasa ini sama artinya dengan “need” yang artinya “membutuhkan“. Jadi “I could use” sama artinya dengan “I need.

Contoh:

  • I am so tired and my muscles are so tense. I could use a very good massage.

3) Positive

“Positive” sama artinya dengan “sure” atau “yakin”. Jadi jika kamu mengatakan “I’m positive” artinya “Saya yakin”.

Contoh:

  • I’m pretty positive that he cheated the test. Unfortunately the professor didn’t know about that.

4) Fishy

Sesuatu itu “fishy” jika ia “mencurigakan”. Jadi “fishy” artinya sama dengan “mencurigakan”.

Contoh:

  • The job offer smells fishy. How could you get ten million rupiahs in just ten days of work?!

5) Bummer

“Bummer” adalah ungkapan ekspresi kekesalan ketika kita mengalami sesuatu yang buruk. Sama seperti ketika kita mengatakan, “Sial!”

Contoh:

  • Bummer! This is my second “C” in Biology for this semester. What am I supposed to do with my report card then?

6) “Lost it

Lost it” adalah ekspresi yang digunakan ketika kita begitu senang atau heboh akan sesuatu sampai-sampai kita melupakan sekeliling.

Contoh:

  • When I met Justin Bieber backstage, I just lost it!

7) “Kick ass

Frasa ini berarti kita melakukan sesuatu yang hebat atau keren.

Contoh:

  • You kicked ass, man! You turned the whole venue into a screaming sea of people.

8) “A tool

Kita mengatakan seseorang “a tool” jika ia membosankan, tidak menyenangkan, atau tidak bisa diajak bercanda.

Contoh:

  • I don’t want to hang out with Evan because he’s such a tool.

9) “Blow your mind

Frasa in berarti sesuatu membuat kamu terpesona/terkesima/takjub.

Contoh:

  • You should come to his show. It will blow your mind.

10) Douche

Kita mengatakan seseorang “douche” jika dia sangat menjengkelkan, norak, atau sangat bodoh.

Contoh:

  • You’re such a douche. Leave me alone.

Di antara 10 kata atau frase tadi, “bummer, kick ass, douche” bisa berarti offensive (kasar) jika digunakan dengan orang atau dalam situasi yang tidak tepat.
