#EngTips: Useful English conversation phrases (2)

  1. ..got it.” Arti: kita telah memahami sesuatu, misalnya apa yang dibicarakan lawan bicara.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Let’s play football tonight.

      • B: I can’t, I have work to do.

      • A: Oh, I got it. You’re looking for that promotion.

  2. ..have/has made up ..mind.” Arti: kita telah membuat suatu keputusan.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Do you have any plan for tomorrow?

      • B: Yeah, I’ve made up my mind. I think I’m going to stay in and do nothing.

  3. Speak for yourself.” Arti: sama dengan catchphrase yang berarti “Lu aja kali.” Misalnya, ketika ada seorang teman mengatakan ia lapar, sementara kamu tidak, kamu bisa mengatakan padanya, “Speak for yourself.”
    • Contoh:
      • A: I think we’re all going to fail the English exam.

      • B: Speak for yourself. I studied hard. I think I’ll pass.

  4. Sugarcoat” (Verb). Arti:  menutupi sesuatu supaya terlihat lebih menarik atau lebih bagus.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Was Anna’s vacation good? She looks so depressed now.

      • B: Her parents might have sugarcoated the trip a little bit.

  5. It’s a real treat.” Arti: senang akan sesuatu, bisa sesuatu yang kita lihat/dengar, dll.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Our old friend, Andrew, is coming to town tomorrow.

      • B: Oh, really? I’m sure it’s going to be a real treat!

  6. ..sleep on it.” Arti: sulit memutuskan sesuatu, maka kita “membawanya tidur” terlebih dahulu.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Have you decided what university you’ll go to?

      • B: I’m not sure yet. I think I’ll sleep on it. We’ll see tomorrow.

  7. ..have/has a way with (something).” Arti: dia sukses dengan sesuatu atau bidang itu.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Alex is such a successful author now.

      • B: I know. Since he was in college, he has always had a way with words.

  8. ..can’t agree more.” Arti: kita sangat setuju dengan pernyataan yang kita dengar.
    • Contoh:
      • A: I think the key to a successful English learning is a lot of practice.

      • B: I can’t agree more.

  9. You wish! Arti: tidak mungkin; seperti mengatakan, “Ya ya.. Mimpi aja terus!”
    • Contoh:
      • A: Five years from now I will live a luxurious life filled with lots of money, fame, and fortune.

      • B: You wish!

  10. On the verge of breaking down.” Arti: sedang mengalami depresi/tekanan jiwa/stres yang berlebihan.
    • Conth=oh:
      • A: I think I’m on the verge of breaking down. My family, work, social life.

      • B: Take it easy, buddy. It’s gonna be OK.
