#EngTips: Useful English conversation phrases (1)

  1. I couldn’t help it!” Arti: tidak bisa mengontrol diri kita untuk melakukan sesuatu, misalnya, tidak dapat menolak sebuah ajakan.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Did you say yes when Alex asked you out?

      • B: Yes.

      • A: But why?!

      • B: I couldn’t help it! He’s so sweet.

  2. ..have a word with (someone).” Arti: ingin membicarakan/mendiskusikan sesuatu dengan seseorang.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Hey, the boss would like to have a word with you.

      • B: Really? I hope it’s about my promotion.

      • A: You wish.

  3. Give me a hand.” Arti: membutuhkan pertolongan seseorang, artinya sama dengan “Tolong aku.”
    • Contoh:
      • A: What are you doing?

      • B: I’m trying to fix this bicycle. Give me a hand, will you?

      • A: OK. What can I do to help?

  4. All tied up.” Arti: menyatakan kita sibuk atau tidak bisa melakukan hal lain selain yang sedang dikerjakan.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Can you give me a hand here? I can’t finish this work by myself.

      • B: I’m sorry, but I’m afraid I’m all tied up now.

  5. Didn’t/doesn’t add up” Arti: merasa ada yang tidak masuk akal/tidak bisa dijelaskan.
    • Contoh:
      • A: His story didn’t add up at all.

      • B: I know. I think he lied to me.

  6. Grab a bite” Arti: “makan/mencari makan”, biasanya di sela-sela kesibukan, waktu istirahat, atau waktu luang.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Let’s grab a bite on our way home. I’m so hungry after this workout.

      • B: That sounds like a good idea!

  7. In no time” Arti: ingin mengatakan sesuatu dikerjakan/berlalu dengan sangat cepat.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Can you make me a cup of coffee for me, please?

      • B: No problem. A cup of coffee will be ready in no time!

  8. Keep an eye on.. (something/someone)” Arti: memperhatikan sesuatu/seseorang dengan seksama.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Please keep an eye on baby Jim. I’m going to the neighbor’s house for a minute.

      • B: No worries, I will.

  9. Keep (someone) on the loop” Arti: keep (someone) updated; memberi informasi terbaru pada seseorang.
    • Contoh:
      • A: Any news about the winner of the competition?

      • B: Not yet. But I promise to keep you on the loop.

      • A: OK. Thanks.

  10. Have a second thought” Arti: berubah pikiran, misalnya kita ingin mengubah keputusan awal.
    • Contoh:
      • A: This is the tenth time she said no.

      • B: Don’t worry, keep trying. Who knows she will have a second thought.
