#EngTrivia: adverb vs adjective

Masih ada yang suka terbalik kalau menggunakan adverb dan adjective? Mungkin masih ada yang bingung apa bedanya adverb dan adjective.

Adjective adalah kata sifat dan dipakai untuk menerangkan kata benda (noun) atau kata ganti benda/orang (pronoun).

  • Contoh: young girl, new car, happy feeling, soft cotton, common mistake, expensive necklace, useful information, jealous boyfriend.

Adverb adalah kata keterangan dan dipakai untuk menerangkan kata kerja (verb). Kalau adverb, temannya pasti verb.

Adverb biasanya (tapi tidak selalu ya) dibentuk dengan menambah -ly ke kata sifat.

  • Contoh (1): dress beautifully, smile happily, whisper softly, run quickly, speak loudly, drive carefully, work slowly.
  • Contoh (2): feel well, stand still, study hard, work late, run fast, crouch low.

Note: posisi adverb bisa di awal kalimat, di akhir kalimat, setelah verb be or auxiliary, atau sebelum sebuah verb lain. Selama bisa menjelaskan verb, dimengerti dan tidak teredengar aneh.

Contoh:

  • Di awal kalimat: “Usually” she wakes up late every weekend.
  • Di akhir kalimat: They perform very “well”.
  • Setelah verb be: She is “slowly” finishing her diploma.
  • Setelah auxiliary: He has “already” found the lost keys.
