#EngClass: coordinating conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions sangat simple. Ada 7 kata yang biasa digunakan: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.

Orang banyak menyingkatnya menjadi: FANBOYS.

  1. For, berarti ‘karena’, banyak digunakan di karya sastra dan jarang digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari karena mempunyai kesan sangat formal. Contoh: She always sleeps with the lights on, for she’s afraid of dark.
  2. And, berarti ‘dan’. Contoh: I like coffee, tea, and milk.
  3. Nor, berarti ‘maupun’, digunakan dalam kalimat negatif. Contoh: (1) He doesn’t drink nor smoke. (2) I don’t usually wake up at 5 am, nor do I like to wake up at 6 am.
  4. But, berarti ‘tetapi’. Contoh: I really like coffee but it makes me stay awake all night.
  5. Or, berarti ‘atau’. Contoh: Would you like a cup of coffee or tea?
  6. Yet, berarti ‘namun’. Sebenarnya ‘but’ dan ‘yet’ memiliki makna yang mirip, hanya saja ‘yet’ banyak digunakan di kalimat yang menonjolkan perbedaan. Contoh: (1) Shinta still wanted to dance with Tommy, yet she couldn’t have the courage to ask him. (2) He said he’s a social worker, yet he abused his wife.
  7. So, berarti ‘maka’. Contoh: I want to work as an Interpreter in the future, so I’m studying linguistics.
